Everyone loves a spotless home, but when you’re juggling kids, work, family schedules and a million other things, sometimes it can be difficult to make time for cleaning. Book the right cleaning company by checking online comparison platforms or searching for local cleaning agencies. You can schedule regular cleans that let you focus on other priorities, or choose a one-time clean for a fresh start that you can maintain yourself.

What Type of Cleaning Service Do You Need?

Most cleaning companies offer a variety of types and service frequencies. To figure out what’s right for you, think about why you want the help.

Your Situation

Type and Frequency of Clean

Why It Helps

Overwhelmed, frequently short of time and away from home a lot

Ongoing regular weekly cleans

Takes cleaning mostly off your list altogether

Gives you breathing space and reclaimed time

Long time since last proper clean, but you would be happy to maintain it once the home looks good again

One-time deep clean

Reduces stress

Gives you a fresh start to build on

New baby, new job or a major life project that is taking up your time

Regular weekly cleans for a defined period

Supports you when you need it most

Moving home

Move-in and move-out clean

Leaves your property spotless for new owners

Peace of mind for settling into your new home

Preparing for or recovering from a special event, party or festive season

Pre-event or post-event clean

One-off support with your prep or cleanup

Keeping on top of general tidying, but need a professional reset on bigger jobs

Regular monthly cleans

Provides help with important areas like kitchens, bathrooms and floors

If you’re unsure what you need or whether a cleaning service is right for you, you can always opt for a one-time general clean. This lets you experience the service and see the results before deciding whether you want to book a recurring schedule.

How Can You Book a Cleaning Service?

To book a service, you first need to narrow down your options. When you’re choosing which company to use, the key factors to assess are trust and security, service quality, cost and logistics.

Trust and security: Ensure the company is fully insured and bonded and ask whether it vets or background-checks staff. Check independent reviews on platforms such as Google, Yelp or local community forums. Ask for references from current clients.

Service quality: Ask for a detailed checklist of what a clean involves and find out to what extent you can customise it. Find out if there is a satisfaction guarantee, and what happens if you are not happy with the service.

Cost: Make sure you understand whether you are paying a flat rate or an hourly rate, and check that the price is all-inclusive. When comparing quotes from different companies, make sure you are comparing similar services.

Logistics: Find out how easy it is to schedule, reschedule or cancel a cleaning. Ask whether you will see the same crew each time, and whether you can leave a key with the company.

Once you have chosen a firm, call it to request a quote. This will often involve an in-home visit to ensure the team can meet your needs. If you are happy with the quote, go ahead and schedule the first appointment.

What Does a Cleaning Service Include?

The specifics vary by company, but booking a professional cleaning service, such as Maid Bright, will give you a clear, up-front checklist of what its crew will do. For example, its standard cleans include:

Kitchen: Wiping counters and cabinet exteriors, cleaning the sink, wiping down appliance exteriors, cleaning the hob and mopping the floor.

Bathrooms: Cleaning and sanitising toilets, showers, tubs, sinks and mirrors.

General: Dusting all surfaces, light fixtures and lamps, vacuuming carpets and rugs, wiping windowsills and blinds, and cleaning floors.

Most teams focus on actual cleaning, not tidying or home organisation. It helps the cleaning team work efficiently if you pick up toys and clutter beforehand.

Is It Safe to Have Cleaners in My Home?

Reputable cleaning companies prioritise safety through rigorous staff vetting, including background checks. When you choose a reputable firm, its insurance will protect you against theft or damage.

You can choose whether you and your family are at home or not when cleaning takes place. Most companies allow you to leave a key or access code with them so staff can access your property when you are out or away, but you can also opt to schedule cleans for when you are home. It’s entirely up to you and what makes you feel comfortable.

Can a Cleaning Service Help With My Family’s Allergies?

A regular cleaning service can support your family’s health, especially if you or your loved ones have allergies. For example, daily vacuuming reduces dust mite triggers over time, while regular dusting and mopping help trap and remove pollen and other allergens that enter your home through open doors and windows, and on clothing.

Are the Chemicals Cleaning Companies Use Safe for Children?

Many professional cleaning services understand concerns about this and offer green cleaning options, with safe, nontoxic products. Many standard products emit Volatile Organic Compounds, which have been linked to asthma and other respiratory conditions, especially when different products are used together. If this is a key issue for you, talk to your chosen company about the kinds of chemicals they use.

How Much Does a Professional Cleaning Service Cost?

Cleaning company prices vary based on your location, the size and condition of your home, and the services you book. As a rule of thumb, a standard clean may cost around £75 per week, but a personalised quote is the only true way to know.

On a tight budget, hiring cleaners may feel like a luxury, but there’s a better way to view it. As well as investing in a service, you’re also buying back your time. The cognitive load mums carry is immense. Taking cleaning off your never-ending to-do list protects your maternal mental health, and that matters for the whole family. Whether you spend your saved time with the kids or prioritise your own self-care, your investment in a professional cleaning service can be well worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Booking a Cleaning Service

Learn more about booking professional cleaning services to reclaim your time and enjoy a spotless home.

How do you prepare my house before the cleaners arrive?

You don’t need to preclean — cleaners are there to help you and nobody will judge your home. However, it will help your team if you can pick up obvious clutter first. If you have pets, secure them away from where cleaning will take place. Curious toddlers and kids are often welcome onlookers, but remember that your children will be your responsibility, as always.

What if you need to cancel a booked cleaning?

Check with your company for details of any cancellation policy. If you can give reasonable notice of the cancellation, many firms will allow you to rebook for a later date without extra charges, but last-minute cancellations may incur a cost.

What happens if cleaners break something?

Professional cleaning crews take the utmost care in your home, but accidents can happen, and mums understand that better than most. A reputable firm will cover the repair or replacement costs either directly or through their public liability insurance. Be sure to report the damage promptly, and include photos.

Investing in Your Home and Family

For busy mums, time is often the most precious commodity. By knowing how to book a cleaning service, you can invest in your own mental health and your household’s well-being. Getting help with cleaning is a strategic decision, whether it’s a one-time deep clean to get you back up to speed or a regular weekly lifting of the burden. Research your local options carefully and choose the company that feels right for you.

The post How to Book a Professional Cleaning Service for Your Home first appeared on Mum Stuff.

When a pipe bursts or the toilet overflows, homeowners are often caught off guard by the urgency of the situation. Quick resolution is imperative, and having a local plumber on speed dial can change the outcome from disastrous to manageable.

Local plumbing experts bring an intimate understanding of regional infrastructure challenges and are equipped to act swiftly. In this article, we’ll explore the value of hiring local plumbers for emergency situations and the positive impact they have on such critical moments.

Rapid Response to Plumbing Emergencies by Local Experts

Hiring a local plumber ensures a rapid response when every second counts during a plumbing emergency. These professionals can usually arrive at your doorstep faster than a technician from a distant company, reducing the risk of exacerbating the issue.

Local plumbers are familiar with the intricacies of the community’s plumbing systems and can quickly identify common issues. This familiarity often translates to faster diagnostics and resolution, minimizing water damage and restoration costs. If you’re unsure how to begin your search, looking for a plumber near me can help you find qualified professionals in your area.

In the event of an emergency, look for a local plumber with a strong track record of prompt service. Check online reviews and testimonials to gauge their response time and customer satisfaction, as these can be indicators of their ability to handle urgent situations effectively.

Mitigating Damage: How Local Plumbers Offer Immediate Solutions

Immediate intervention is critical for limiting the damage from a plumbing disaster. Local plumbers can often provide on-the-spot repairs and professional advice to contain the problem before it leads to more significant damage.

A seasoned local plumber comes prepared with the necessary tools and parts to tackle common emergencies. They’re also more capable of navigating local supply chains to obtain any specialized equipment without delay, further mitigating damages.

When facing a plumbing emergency, don’t hesitate to act. Shut off the main water supply if possible and call a local plumber immediately. This proactive measure combined with their expedient service will contribute significantly to damage control.

Customized Plumbing Services Catering to Community Needs

Local plumbers offer services that are tailored to the specific needs of the community they serve. They understand the local environment, weather patterns, and the types of buildings in their service area, allowing them to provide more precise and relevant plumbing services.

Their expertise extends to advising on preventative measures and maintenance tailored to your locale’s unique challenges, such as hard water problems or freezing pipe risks. Such personalized guidance is invaluable and stems from their on-the-ground experience.

For tailored services, engage with local plumbers who are active participants in the community. They are more likely to have insights into the specifics needed to maintain your home’s plumbing system according to local conditions and regulations.

Building Trust with Reliable Local Plumbing Professionals

Repeatedly working with reliable local plumbers builds a relationship of trust, ensuring that you have a professional you can count on in times of need. This relationship can lead to better service as the plumber becomes familiar with your home’s plumbing network.

Local plumbers are vested in maintaining their reputation within the community, which often results in a higher standard of service. They tend to go above and beyond to solve your plumbing problems, as their business thrives on local word-of-mouth referrals.

Nurture a professional relationship with your local plumber by scheduling regular maintenance visits. Not only does this keep your plumbing in good shape, but it also ensures that you have a trusted professional who is readily available and willing to prioritize your emergency needs.

Ultimately, hiring a local plumber can significantly transform emergency plumbing scenarios, offering rapid response times, customized solutions, and opportunities to build trusting, long-term relationships. The benefits of immediate professional support cannot be overstated, as it means quicker mitigation of damages, personalized services, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have an experienced professional just a phone call away.

The post How Hiring a Local Plumber Transforms Emergency Plumbing Situations first appeared on Mum Stuff.

If you’re anything like me, you’re brilliant at washing pillowcases… and far less brilliant at remembering the actual pillows underneath. […]

The post How To Wash And Care For Pillows Properly first appeared on Mum Stuff.

If you’re anything like me, you’re brilliant at washing pillowcases… and far less brilliant at remembering the actual pillows underneath.

But pillows quietly collect sweat, skin oils, dust and allergens over time, and giving them proper care can help them stay fresher, last longer and feel nicer to sleep on.

Cleaning advice depends on what’s inside your pillow, so the first job is working out what you’ve got.

A Quick Rule Before You Start

Always check the care label first. If it gives specific temperature or drying instructions, follow those over any general guide. If your pillow is torn, leaking filling, or has foam that’s crumbling, it’s probably past saving and better replaced.

How Often Should You Wash Pillows

A common recommendation from cleaning and sleep guidance sources is washing washable pillows around every three to six months, with pillowcases washed weekly and protectors washed regularly too.

The short version: if you’ve had illness in the house, there’s a noticeable smell, you’ve got allergy flare-ups, or the pillow is visibly marked, don’t wait for your “schedule”.

Before Washing Any Washable Pillow

Use A Pillow Protector
Once your pillow is clean, a zippered protector is the easiest way to keep it that way. It also reduces how much sweat and drool (lovely) reaches the pillow itself.

Spot-Treat Stains
Dab (don’t scrub) with a mild detergent and water. Let it sit briefly, then blot again with clean water.

Wash Two At A Time
If you’re machine-washing, doing two pillows together helps balance the drum.

Use A Gentle Detergent And Less Than You Think
Too much detergent can leave residue inside the pillow, which can make it feel clumpy or stiff after drying.

Down And Feather Pillows

Most down and feather pillows are machine-washable, but they need gentle handling.

How To Wash

Use a delicate cycle with cool or warm water, and a mild detergent. An extra rinse is helpful to clear out soap trapped in the filling.

How To Dry

Drying matters as much as washing. Use low heat and expect it to take a while. Add dryer balls (or clean tennis balls) to help break up clumps and restore fluff. Keep checking that the pillow is fully dry all the way through, because damp feathers can smell and potentially develop mildew.

Top Tip

If your down pillow has any tears or weak seams, don’t machine wash it. Feathers escaping into your washing machine is a level of chaos no one needs.

Synthetic And Polyester (Microfibre) Pillows

These are usually the easiest. They’re commonly machine-washable and dry faster than natural fills.

How To Wash

Use a gentle cycle with warm (or cool) water and mild detergent. If the pillow is very sweaty or yellowed, you can run a second rinse.

How To Dry

Low to medium heat is typically fine if the label allows tumble drying. Make sure it’s completely dry to prevent that musty “been left in the washing machine overnight” smell.

Memory Foam Pillows

This is the one that catches people out: many memory foam pillows should not go in the washing machine, and they also shouldn’t be soaked. Foam dries slowly, which raises the risk of trapped moisture and damage.

What To Do Instead

Vacuum: Use the upholstery attachment to lift dust and debris.

Spot clean: Dab stains with a mild detergent solution, then blot with clean water.

Air dry thoroughly: Leave it somewhere warm and well-ventilated, out of direct heat.

Important Note

Some memory foam pillows have removable, washable covers. If yours does, wash the cover as directed and focus on spot-cleaning the foam insert.

Latex Foam Pillows

Latex is also generally treated as “do not machine wash” unless the manufacturer says otherwise. Like memory foam, it can be damaged by agitation and slow drying.

Care Routine

Vacuum regularly, spot-clean small marks, and let it fully air dry. If you use a protector and wash that often, latex pillows tend to stay in decent shape.

Wool Pillows

Wool is brilliant for temperature regulation, but it needs a gentler approach. Some wool pillows are washable, others have washable covers with removable filling, and some are strictly spot-clean only.

If Yours Is Washable

Use cool water, a wool-safe detergent, and a gentle/wool cycle, then avoid tumble drying unless the label explicitly allows it. Many wool care guides recommend air drying to protect the fibres.

Everyday Care

Wool often benefits from regular airing. A few hours in fresh air can help keep it smelling clean between proper washes.

Buckwheat Hull Pillows

Buckwheat pillows are very much a “separate the parts” situation. You usually wash the outer cover and care for the hulls separately.

How To Clean

Remove the hulls into a clean container. Wash the fabric case as the label allows (often machine washable). For the hulls, many buckwheat pillow makers recommend airing them out and drying them thoroughly (some suggest sunning them for a few hours) rather than washing them with water.

Why So Fussy

If hulls get damp and stay damp, they can smell and degrade. Keep them dry.

What About Bamboo, Kapok, And “Cooling Gel” Pillows

A lot of pillows marketed as bamboo are actually bamboo-derived fabric covers over polyester or foam fills.

“Cooling gel” is often a layer or insert combined with foam. In both cases, treat them based on what the filling is, not the marketing label: washable synthetic fills can usually be machine-washed, while foam-based pillows typically need spot-cleaning.

When in doubt, follow the label and wash the removable cover only.

Drying And Storage Basics That Matter More Than You’d Think

Make sure pillows are completely dry before putting them back on the bed. Any lingering dampness can lead to odours and mildew.

Fluff pillows daily (just a quick shake) and try not to sleep on a pillow that’s still slightly damp from a “quick refresh”.

A Cleaner Pillow, A Better Night

Clean pillows aren’t about being perfect or turning your laundry routine into a second job.

It’s just one of those small, satisfying resets that makes bedtime feel nicer, helps keep things hygienic, and can stop pillows getting gross long before their time.

Work out what type you’ve got, follow the label, and build a simple rhythm: protect, wash when you can, spot-clean when you can’t, and dry properly every single time.

The post How To Wash And Care For Pillows Properly first appeared on Mum Stuff.

When the festive season arrives, nothing captures the spirit quite like a beautifully adorned Christmas tree. It becomes the heart of holiday decor, where families gather, gifts are shared, and memories are made. But is a real tree the best option? Increasingly, holiday enthusiasts are turning to a life like Christmas tree as a practical, stunning alternative that offers numerous benefits.

Cost-Effectiveness of Lifelike Christmas Trees: A Wise Long-Term Investment

While the initial cost of a lifelike tree may be higher than purchasing a real tree, the investment quickly pays for itself over time. Lifelike trees, when cared for properly, can last for many years, sidestepping the annual expenditure on real trees. The one-time purchase thus becomes an economically sound decision that offers considerable savings over the long haul.

With the prospect of use year after year, lifelike trees also eliminate the time and fuel costs associated with tree-shopping trips. Families can invest those saved hours into more holiday enjoyment or relaxation. The convenience of having a ready-to-decorate tree at hand removes the logistical hurdle of fitting a real tree into snug living spaces or negotiating transport from lot to home.

In addition to these direct financial benefits, the non-perishable nature of lifelike trees means they seldom need replacement parts or accessories. There’s no need for a new stand each year or tools to trim awkward branches.

Environmental Benefits of Choosing Lifelike Over Real Trees: Sustainability Matters

In our increasingly eco-conscious society, the sustainability of our choices, especially during the holiday season, has come into focus. Lifelike trees offer several environmental advantages over their real counterparts. Firstly, they reduce the need for annual tree farming, which can involve pesticides and water consumption that synthetic trees do not require.

Moreover, artificial trees prevent the annual cutting of millions of real trees which, although often grown specifically for the holiday season, still contributes to deforestation and its associated wildlife habitat loss. By investing in a lifelike tree, you’re choosing a product that will serve your household for years without depleting natural resources year after year.

It should also be noted that advancements in the materials used to produce lifelike trees have improved recyclability at the end of their long life. Manufacturers understand the importance of sustainability and are increasingly creating products that align with eco-friendly principles.

Convenience and Ease of Use: The Hassle-Free Holiday Experience

The annual ritual of selecting and setting up a real tree is steeped in nostalgia but not without its frustrations. Lifelike Christmas trees streamline this tradition with easy assembly and disassembly. Artificial trees are generally designed with user convenience in mind, often featuring hinged branches that simply fold out and sections that snap together effortlessly.

This user-friendly setup is particularly appreciated by those who dread the messy needle shedding, sticky sap, and cumbersome disposal processes associated with real trees. Lifelike trees circumvent these nuisances, remaining clean and tidy throughout the holiday season. The post-holiday teardown is just as straightforward, with many models fitting snugly into compact storage bags or boxes that protect them until next year.

Safety and Durability: Investing in a Family-Friendly Holiday Centerpiece

Safety concerns are paramount when integrating decorations into a home, especially with young children and pets present. Lifelike Christmas trees pose fewer risks than real trees, which can become fire hazards if they dry out. Artificial trees are often made with fire-resistant materials, providing peace of mind to families as they light up the tree. This intrinsic safety feature underlines why a lifelike tree is a smart addition to a family-friendly home.

Beyond fire safety, the sturdiness of a quality artificial tree means it can withstand the excitement of children and pets better than a real tree. The fear of a pet knocking over a heavy, water-filled stand or curious kids pulling on unstable branches lessens with the robust construction of lifelike models. Parents can rest assured that the tree will endure holiday exuberance year after year.

Healthwise, lifelike trees present a significant benefit for those with allergies to pine or other organic materials commonly used in real trees. By opting for synthetic, these individuals can enjoy the festive beauty without suffering the adverse effects that might otherwise mar their holiday enjoyment. Allergen-free and enduring, lifelike trees cater to family health and comfort in more ways than one.

Overall, the numerous advantages of investing in a lifelike Christmas tree make it an appealing choice for any holiday enthusiast. As you unpack your decorations each year, a lifelike Christmas tree remains a reliable, beautiful, and safe centerpiece of your home’s festive transformation.

The post Why a Lifelike Christmas Tree is the Ultimate Holiday Investment: Benefits You Can’t Ignore first appeared on Mum Stuff.

The post How To Get Blu Tack Off A Wall Without Damaging It first appeared on Mum Stuff.

If you’ve ever said yes to the kids sticking something on the wall and then wished you hadn’t when it came time to remove it, you’re not alone. Blu Tack is brilliant… right up until it’s been there a while, the room’s a bit warm, and it leaves that stubborn bitty residue or greasy halo behind.

The good news: most walls can be rescued without repainting, as long as you go gently and in the right order. The big mistake is jumping straight to scrubbing, which is exactly how you end up with peeled paint or a shiny patch that won’t blend in.

Before You Start, Do A Quick Wall Check

Different wall finishes react differently, so take 20 seconds to work out what you’re dealing with:

Painted plaster (common emulsion) usually copes well with gentle rolling and light cleaning.

Matt paint marks more easily than silk/satin, and can “polish” if you rub hard.

Wallpaper can tear or lift if it gets too wet.

Fresh paint (within a few weeks) is more likely to peel.

If you’re unsure, start in the least visible corner first and do a patch test with any cleaner you plan to use. That patch-test advice matters especially for stronger products like citrus cleaners, sugar soap, chewing gum remover, or lighter fuel.

What You’ll Need

You won’t necessarily use all of this, but it helps to have it nearby:

A clean lump of Blu Tack (or similar reusable putty)

Hairdryer (optional but helpful)

A plastic card (old loyalty card) or plastic scraper

Soft cloths or kitchen roll

Washing-up liquid and warm water

Cornstarch baby powder / talc / cornflour (for greasy marks)

Optional for stubborn residue: a citrus-based cleaner, sugar soap, or chewing gum remover (only after patch testing).

Step 1: Lift The Blu Tack With More Blu Tack

This feels ridiculous, but it’s often the safest first move.

Take a fresh piece and gently press it onto the stuck bits, then lift away. Repeat like you’re “dabbing” rather than rubbing. It works because Blu Tack tends to stick to itself, and you’re not dragging paint along the surface.

If the residue is crumbly, you can also roll the fresh piece into a little ball and lightly roll it over the area.

If you stop here and the wall looks fine, you’re done. No cleaning needed.

Step 2: Soften Stubborn Tack With Low Heat

If the Blu Tack has gone hard or feels welded on, warm it up before you try again.

Use a hairdryer on low to medium heat, hold it a few inches away, and keep it moving side to side. You’re aiming for slightly softened, not “baked wall”. This is commonly recommended as a way to loosen adhesive without yanking at the surface.

Once it’s warmed, go back to the dab-and-lift method with fresh Blu Tack.

Step 3: Use A Plastic Card, Not A Knife

If there’s still a thin layer that won’t lift, use a plastic card at a shallow angle and gently nudge it off. Think “coax”, not “scrape”.

Avoid metal tools. They’re more likely to gouge plaster, catch wallpaper seams, or lift paint edges.

After you’ve lifted what you can, wipe the area very lightly with a dry cloth to remove loose crumbs.

Step 4: Deal With The Greasy Mark The Right Way

This is the bit that makes people think the wall is ruined: the tack comes off, but you’re left with an oily stain.

Before you add any liquid, try absorption first. A cornstarch-based baby powder (or similar powder) can help soak up oily residue. Sprinkle a little on, leave it for 15–20 minutes, then gently brush or wipe away.

If the mark is older or darker, you can repeat this a couple of times.

This approach is particularly useful on matt paint, because it avoids the “polished patch” you get from rubbing.

Step 5: Only Then Try Gentle Cleaning

If there’s still a shadow, move up to the mildest wet clean.

Mix a few drops of washing-up liquid into warm water. Lightly dampen a soft cloth (not dripping) and dab the area. Don’t soak the wall, especially if it’s wallpaper or the paint is delicate. Then pat dry with kitchen roll.

If the mark improves, stop there and let it fully dry before deciding whether it needs another round. Walls often look worse while damp.

Step 6: For Really Stubborn Residue, Use Stronger Products Carefully

If you’re still left with tack residue or staining, there are stronger options, but treat them like a “last resort” and always patch test first.

Bostik’s own guidance notes that chewing gum remover, a citrus-based cleaner, sugar soap, or lighter fuel can sometimes remove residue, and specifically advises patch testing in an inconspicuous area to avoid further marking.

A few practical rules if you go down this route:

Ventilate the room and keep kids well away while you’re using solvents.

Apply the product to a cloth or cotton pad first, not directly onto the wall.

Dab and lift rather than scrubbing.

If you use anything oily (including some “sticky stuff” style removers), be aware it can create its own stain problem rather than solving it.

If the wall is rented and you’re trying to avoid a patchy repaint, it’s usually better to do several gentle passes than one aggressive clean.

When Repairs are Needed

Sometimes Blu Tack reveals an issue that was already waiting to happen: old paint that wasn’t well bonded, cheap emulsion that marks if you breathe on it, or wallpaper that’s lifting anyway.

If the paint has lifted or the blu tack has taken a small circle out of your wall when it came away, you’re into “repair” rather than “removal”: a tiny bit of filler or smoother (only if needed), then a careful touch-up with the best colour match you can get usually works. You can get fine surface fillers for really small blemishes.

If you’re in your own home, keeping a small labelled pot of leftover paint for exactly this situation is one of those boring mum habits that pays off massively.

How To Stop It Happening Again

If you’ve got kids who love displaying absolutely everything, a few lower-stress options:

Use removable adhesive strips designed for walls, especially on painted surfaces.

Put up a cork board, magnetic board, or string-and-pegs display area.

On freshly painted walls, give the paint plenty of curing time before sticking anything to it.

And of course, keep the blu tack somewhere out of reach from now on!

The post How To Get Blu Tack Off A Wall Without Damaging It first appeared on Mum Stuff.

Your Rights and Your Landlord’s Responsibilities first appeared on Mum Stuff.

There’s nothing quite like the smell of damp to make you worry about your home—and when you’ve got young kids to think about, it’s not just unpleasant, it’s genuinely concerning. Mould in a rented house isn’t something you should have to just live with, and thankfully, the law agrees.

If you’re currently dealing with mould in your home and wondering what your landlord is supposed to do about it (or what to do if they’re ignoring it), this post will walk you through everything you need to know. We’ll also look at what might be causing it in the first place, and what responsibilities you might have as the tenant.

Whether you’re after quick answers or want to understand the full picture, it’s all here—without any waffle.

Are Landlords Legally Responsible for Mould?

In most cases, yes—they are.

Landlords have a legal duty under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 to keep the property in a decent condition. That includes looking after the structure of the building, making sure it’s free from serious damp, and keeping essential things like heating and ventilation in working order.

There’s also the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018, which basically says rented homes must be safe and suitable to live in—not just on day one, but for the whole length of the tenancy.

If the mould in your home is being caused by something like a leaky roof, rising damp, faulty extractor fans or poor insulation, it’s your landlord’s responsibility to put it right. And not eventually—promptly.

Mould and Kids is a Course for Concern

If it was just a cosmetic issue, it would still be annoying. But the truth is, mould can be a real health hazard—especially for children.

Mould spores can trigger breathing problems, coughing, skin irritation and asthma. If your little one already has sensitive skin or allergies, it’s even more of a problem. And babies, with their developing lungs, are particularly vulnerable.

So if you’re feeling like you’re overreacting by asking your landlord to sort it—you’re not. You’re protecting your family, and you have every right to demand a safe place to live.

The Real Causes of Mould in Your Home

Mould loves moisture. It turns up when there’s too much damp in the air or in the walls, and not enough ventilation to clear it out. Some common culprits include:

Leaks from pipes, roofs, gutters or windows

Condensation, often caused by cooking, showering or drying clothes indoors

Lack of ventilation, like no extractor fan in the bathroom

Poor insulation or broken heating, leaving rooms cold and damp

Rising damp, especially in older buildings

Understanding the cause is key, because it affects whether the landlord is responsible—or whether they might try to put it on you.

The Landlord is Often at Fault – But Not Always

If the mould is due to problems with the building—like broken guttering, cracked walls, faulty windows, or heating that doesn’t work—that’s firmly in landlord territory.

Even if it’s something like condensation, if the house doesn’t have proper ventilation or insulation to handle everyday life (like cooking dinner or bathing the kids), your landlord may still be responsible.

They’re expected to respond within a reasonable time once they’re told about it. There’s no exact number of days written into law, but 14 days is often used as a guide. If there’s a health concern involved—especially with children—it should be much quicker.

The Tenant Also Has Responsibilities

Yes, but they’re limited—and common sense plays a big part.

If the mould is mainly caused by how the home is being used—like constantly drying laundry indoors without opening a window, or not using an extractor fan when one is provided—the landlord might say it’s your responsibility.

That said, if the home isn’t set up properly for family life (no tumble dryer, no fan, windows that don’t open properly, or heating that you can’t afford to run), you’re not expected to work miracles. Living normally shouldn’t result in mould, and it’s not fair to expect you to open windows in freezing weather just to keep the walls dry.

What to do if you Spot Mould

Report it in writing
Send a message or email to your landlord or letting agent. Include photos and explain where the mould is, how long it’s been there, and if it seems to be getting worse.

Keep a record
Save all replies, and note down any phone conversations or visits. This can be really important if things escalate.

Give them a chance to respond
Most landlords will have a legal duty to investigate and make repairs. If they’re dragging their feet, mention that the property may no longer be fit for human habitation—sometimes that’s what it takes to get action.

Speak to your GP if needed
If your child is showing signs of a mould-related illness—like a persistent cough or wheezing—it’s worth getting medical advice. A GP’s note can help support your case if things get serious.

What if the Landlord Doesn’t do Anything?

Unfortunately, some landlords are slow to act—or flat-out refuse to acknowledge there’s a problem. If that’s where you’re at, here’s what you can do:

Contact your local council

Ask to speak to the Environmental Health team. They can inspect the property and, if they agree there’s a hazard, issue a notice forcing the landlord to fix it. Councils take mould seriously, especially when children are involved.

Complain to the letting agent

If you rent through an agency, raise a formal complaint. All agents must belong to a redress scheme (like The Property Ombudsman), and if they don’t deal with the issue, you can escalate it there.

Take it to court

Under the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act, you can go to court to force repairs and potentially claim compensation. You don’t need a lawyer to do this—but it’s a good idea to get advice from Shelter or Citizens Advice first.

Keep Paying Rent

It’s tempting not to – but don’t do this without legal advice.

Withholding rent can put you at risk of eviction, even if your landlord is in the wrong. It’s much safer to follow the proper channels and get support if needed. There are legal ways to hold rent in escrow, but it has to be done by the book.

What if I Live in Social Housing?

If your home is managed by a council or housing association, you still have the same legal rights—but you also have access to the Housing Ombudsman if they won’t act.

In fact, after the tragic death of toddler Awaab Ishak in 2020 (due to prolonged mould exposure), social housing landlords are now under increased pressure to take damp and mould seriously—and quickly.

Where to get Help

You don’t have to deal with this alone. These organisations can support you:

Shelter – shelter.org.uk

Citizens Advice – citizensadvice.org.uk

Environmental Health (through your local council)

Housing Ombudsman – housing-ombudsman.org.uk

They’ll talk you through your options and help you take the next step, whether that’s getting repairs done or holding your landlord accountable.

Dealing with mould is stressful enough without having to chase a landlord who’s ignoring the problem. But you do have rights, and there are people who will back you up.

You shouldn’t have to choose between your child’s health and your landlord’s laziness. So whether you’re living with a musty patch in the corner of the lounge or full-blown black mould in the bathroom, speak up—and keep pushing until it gets sorted.

Because your family deserves a safe, healthy home. Nothing less.

Can you freeze jelly? An odd question you might think, but one I was genuinely asked last week. I have a Whatsapp group with the girls and one of them had an emergency. She had a kids’ party that afternoon and had forgotten to make the jelly the night before. So she asked the group if freezing would help.

I already knew the answer having had a similar experience myself, so I was happy to help, and thought I would pass on my wisdom to you fine people as well.

Oh, and to be clear, I am talking about jelly in the English sense here. Wibble wobble jelly on a plate jelly, not the American peanut butter and jelly kind!

It’s Not a Good Idea

Technically you can freeze jelly, as in, it will go rock solid if you leave it in the freezer. However, if you want to be able to defrost it and eat it again you are going to be disappointed.

Jelly is essentially made of gelatine and water, so it obviously has a very high water content, and when you freeze it large ice crystals form. This breaks down the gelatine’s structure, and once the structure is changed, it can’t go back to exactly how it was before.

So if you were to make and freeze a jelly, then leave it to thaw and defrost, it would not look, feel, or taste the same afterwards. Defrosted jelly looks like a watery, grainy, mess.

It won’t necessarily be totally ruined, but it will definitely be a downgrade.

Can Frozen Jelly Make You Sick?

It shouldn’t do.

The structure of the jelly might have changed but there is nothing in there that should make you sick. Unless you have a strong reaction to the altered texture perhaps.

So you can eat jelly that has been frozen and defrosted, but it might not be particularly pleasant.

That said, people still do it. Some have even reported that the jelly wasn’t changed all that much, but in my experience it’s not very appetising.

You can eat it while it’s still frozen, but again, it wouldn’t be as nice.

There was actually a frozen jelly trend on social media for a while. I’m not sure why. This is the sort of thing they were doing:

It seems to have been as much about the ASMR qualities as the jelly itself, but people were going crazy for this trend.

I tried it, and I have to say that frozen jelly is much nicer than defrosted jelly, although neither can beat the real thing.

How to Make Jelly Set Quickly in an Emergency

The words ‘jelly’ and ’emergency’ are not natural neighbours in a sentence, I agree, but if you had 20 excited 6 year old bearing down on your house in a few hours time and no jelly to contain them, believe me, it would feel like an emergency!

Anyway, despite just explaining why freezing jelly is not a good idea, it can be helpful in the short term.

Jelly takes a long time to set, especially if you have a big bowl full of it rather than lots of smaller shapes. However, putting jelly in the freezer for 10 to 20 minutes can quicken the setting process without ruining the texture.

This is because the cold has enough time to thicken the gelatine, but not enough time to form ice crystals. So the part of the freezing process which breaks down the structure of the gelatine never takes place.

Clever, huh?

So you can freeze jelly to make it set faster, but only if you take it out of the freezer before it is allowed to freeze. That sounds back to front but it actually makes sense!

As a busy mum with a house full of kids, keeping our home clean used to feel like an endless chore. That all changed when I recently invested in a cordless vacuum cleaner. Now, I can honestly say that hoovering has become so much quicker and easier – dare I say, even enjoyable at times!

While I’m fortunate to have the space to store and charge my cordless vac, I know not everyone is in the same position. So I wanted to share my honest thoughts on whether cordless hoovers are truly worth buying for the average household.

Here’s my take on the pros and cons after putting my new cordless vacuum through its paces.

Why I Love It

One of the biggest game-changers for me has been the convenience and flexibility that comes with a cordless hoover. No more wrestling with tangled cords or constantly unplugging and re-plugging as I move from room to room. I can simply grab my cordless vac and start cleaning anywhere in the house without a second thought.

The lightweight design makes it so easy to manoeuvre around furniture and into tight spaces. I can quickly zip under the sofa or dining table to tackle those pesky dust bunnies. And cleaning the stairs is no longer a precarious balancing act.

For quick clean-ups, it’s brilliant. When the kids inevitably spill cereal or track in mud, I can have the cordless hoover out and the mess sorted in no time. No more sighing and thinking “I’ll deal with that later” because it’s such a faff to get the big vacuum out.

The portability also means I can easily take it out to the car to hoover up crumbs and dirt from our family outings. It’s so handy for all those little cleaning jobs that used to feel like too much effort.

Power and Performance

I’ll admit, I was a bit sceptical at first about whether a cordless vacuum could match the suction power of my old corded model. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well it performs, especially on our carpets.

While it may not quite match the most powerful corded vacuums, for everyday cleaning it does a great job. The suction is strong enough to lift dirt, dust and pet hair effectively. And many models have different power settings, so you can boost the suction for tougher jobs.

Of course, performance can vary between different cordless models. It’s worth reading reviews and potentially trying a few options, but in my experience, a good quality cordless vacuum is more than capable of keeping my busy family home clean.

Versatility for All Cleaning Tasks

Another huge plus of cordless hoovers is how versatile they are. Most models convert easily into a handheld vacuum, which is brilliant for all those awkward cleaning jobs.

I use the handheld mode constantly for quickly cleaning up crumbs from the dining table and kitchen counters. It’s great for vacuuming upholstery too – I can easily freshen up the sofa or car seats.

The crevice tool attachment is perfect for getting into nooks and crannies. I use it to clean along skirting boards, window sills, and even to suck up cobwebs from ceiling corners.

Many cordless vacs come with a range of other attachments too. My model has a soft dusting brush that’s great for more delicate surfaces. There’s also a motorised mini brush that works wonders on our stairs.

This multi-functionality means I can tackle pretty much any cleaning task with just one appliance. It’s so much more convenient than having separate vacuums for different jobs.

Storage Solutions

One potential downside of cordless hoovers is finding a good spot to store and charge them. I’m lucky to have a utility cupboard where I can keep mine plugged in and ready to go. But I know not everyone has that luxury.

Many cordless vacuums come with wall-mounting brackets, which can be a good solution if you have some spare wall space. This keeps the vacuum upright and charging while taking up minimal floor space.

If wall-mounting isn’t an option, look for models that can stand up on their own. Some have charging bases that double as storage stands. Or you might be able to tuck the vacuum away in a corner or behind furniture when not in use.

It’s definitely worth considering your storage options before investing in a cordless hoover. But with a bit of creativity, most homes can find a suitable spot.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is obviously a key consideration with cordless vacuums. In my experience, most modern models offer plenty of runtime for average cleaning needs. Mine lasts about 40 minutes on the standard setting, which is enough to clean my whole house.

If you have a larger home or need to do more intensive cleaning, look for models with longer battery life or removable batteries. Some high-end cordless vacs can run for up to an hour or more.

Charging time is another factor to think about. My vacuum takes about 4 hours to fully charge, which I find perfectly manageable. I just pop it on charge after each use, and it’s always ready when I need it.

Some models have quick-charge capabilities, giving you a burst of cleaning power in just 10-15 minutes. This can be handy for unexpected messes or if you forget to charge.

While battery limitations are something to be aware of, I’ve found they rarely impact my day-to-day cleaning routine. The convenience of cordless far outweighs any battery concerns for me.

Maintenance and Emptying

One area where cordless hoovers do require a bit more attention is maintenance. The dust canisters tend to be smaller than traditional vacuums, so they need emptying more frequently.

I’ve gotten into the habit of emptying mine after each use. It only takes a few seconds and ensures the vacuum is always ready for the next clean. Most models have easy-empty systems that make this task relatively mess-free.

Filters also need regular cleaning to keep the vacuum running efficiently. My model has washable filters that I rinse out about once a month. It’s a simple job, but important for maintaining suction power.

Some cordless vacs have more advanced filtration systems that require less frequent maintenance. If you have allergies or are particularly sensitive to dust, it’s worth looking into these options.

While the maintenance might seem like extra work, I find it’s offset by how much quicker and easier the actual cleaning is with a cordless vacuum.

Cost Considerations

It’s true that cordless vacuum cleaners tend to be pricier than their corded counterparts. The advanced battery technology and compact design do come at a cost.

However, I view it as an investment in convenience and time-saving. The amount of time and effort I save on cleaning makes it well worth the initial outlay for me.

There’s also a wide range of cordless models available at different price points. While the top-end brands can be quite expensive, there are plenty of more affordable options that still offer good performance.

It’s worth considering the long-term costs too. Cordless vacuums generally have a shorter lifespan than corded models due to battery degradation. But many now have replaceable batteries, which can extend their usable life.

Suitability for Different Home Types

While I absolutely love my cordless hoover, I recognise that they might not be the best choice for every home. They’re ideal for smaller to medium-sized houses and flats, where you can clean the whole space on a single charge.

For larger homes, you might need to recharge partway through or invest in a model with a longer battery life.

Cordless hoovers are great for homes with a mix of hard floors and carpets. Most models transition seamlessly between different surfaces. However, if you have primarily thick carpets or deal with a lot of heavy-duty messes, you might find a corded vacuum more suitable.

They’re also brilliant for homes with stairs or multiple levels. The lightweight design makes it so much easier to clean stairs and move between floors.

For households with pets, look for cordless models specifically designed to tackle pet hair. Many come with specialised attachments for this purpose.

My Final Verdict

After several months of using a cordless hoover, I can confidently say it’s been a game-changer for keeping our busy family home clean. My husband loves it too.

The convenience and ease of use have transformed vacuuming from a dreaded chore into a quick, painless task.

While there are some limitations to consider, like battery life and dust capacity, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks for me. The freedom to clean anywhere, anytime, without faffing with cords has made a huge difference to our daily tidying routine.

If you’re considering making the switch to cordless, I’d encourage you to give it a try. Just be sure to choose a model that suits your specific needs and home setup. With the right cordless hoover, you might find yourself actually enjoying the vacuuming – or at least not minding it quite so much!

The post Cordless Hoovers are Totally Worth It: Vacuum the Easy Way first appeared on Mum Stuff.

I’ve always been a flower enthusiast. There’s just something lovely about a bunch of flowers, isn’t there?

However, a recent gift from my husband completely transformed my perspective on floral arrangements. Instead of the usual fresh blooms, he presented me with a stunning vase of dried flowers.

At first, I was a bit taken aback – surely they couldn’t compare to fresh petals? How wrong I was!

These preserved beauties have not only won me over but have also sparked a newfound appreciation for the art of dried florals.

Join me as I explain why I believe dried flowers truly deserve a special place in every home.

How I Discovered Them

When my husband walked through the door with a beautifully arranged vase of dried flowers I was getting ready to do my best fake smile.

I’d always associated dried flowers with dusty, faded arrangements tucked away in forgotten corners. But this bouquet was anything but ordinary.

The colours were rich and vibrant, the textures diverse and intriguing. As I examined each stem and petal, I realised there was so much more to dried flowers than I’d ever imagined.

The first thing that struck me was how incredibly lifelike these dried blooms appeared. Far from the brittle, lacklustre specimens I’d encountered in the past, these flowers boasted a unique charm all their own. The delicate petals, though no longer soft to the touch, retained their shape and colour with remarkable fidelity.

The muted tones and interesting textures added a touch of sophistication that fresh flowers, with their fleeting beauty, simply couldn’t match.

I began to see dried flowers not just as an alternative to fresh blooms, but as a distinct and valuable form of home decor in their own right.

Here’s why.

Longevity and Cost

One of the most compelling aspects of dried flowers, especially for a busy mum like myself, is their incredible longevity. As much as I adore fresh flowers, the constant need to replace wilted bouquets can be both time-consuming and costly.

Unlike their fresh counterparts that typically last a week at most, dried flowers can maintain their beauty for months, even years, with proper care. This longevity is not just convenient; it’s a revelation for those of us who can’t be bothered to or can’t afford fresh flowers regularly. No more rushing to replace drooping stems or dispose of browning petals – my dried bouquet remains a constant, cheerful presence in our home.

While the initial cost of a dried flower arrangement might be slightly higher than a fresh bouquet, and I mean very slightly, the long-term savings are significant. When I consider how many fresh bouquets I would have purchased over the lifespan of my dried arrangement, the economic benefits become clear. It’s an investment in enduring beauty that pays dividends over time.

Low Maintenance

As a mum juggling multiple responsibilities, I don’t have time for the daily watering, trimming, and inevitable clean-up of fallen petals sometimes felt like yet another chore on my never-ending to-do list. Dried flowers, however, have proven to be refreshingly low maintenance.

One of the most liberating aspects of dried flowers is that they require no watering or feeding. There’s no risk of coming home to a sad, wilted arrangement because I forgot to top up the vase water. This ‘set it and forget it’ quality is perfect for those of us who love the look of flowers but struggle with their upkeep.

A light dusting now and then is usually all that’s needed to keep them looking their best. This simplicity allows me to enjoy the beauty of flowers without the associated guilt or stress of high-maintenance care.

Versatility

As I’ve explored the world of dried flowers, I’ve been amazed by their versatility. Unlike fresh flowers that are often limited to vases or water-dependent displays, dried blooms open up a world of creative possibilities for home decor.

I’ve discovered that dried flowers can be incorporated into a wide array of decorative items. From wreaths and wall hangings to table centrepieces and even jewellery, the applications seem endless. This versatility allows me to express my creativity and personalise my home decor in ways I never could with fresh flowers.

One particularly appealing aspect of dried flowers is their ability to transition seamlessly between seasons. By simply rearranging or adding a few new elements, I can easily update my dried arrangements to reflect the changing seasons or holidays. This adaptability ensures that my home always feels fresh and in tune with the time of year.

A Sustainable Choice

Dried flowers have emerged as a surprisingly eco-friendly option for home decor too.

Fresh flowers, while beautiful, often have a significant environmental footprint. From the resources used in cultivation to the packaging and transportation required for frequent deliveries, the impact adds up. Dried flowers, with their long lifespan, help reduce this waste. A single dried arrangement can replace dozens of fresh bouquets over time, significantly decreasing the overall environmental impact.

Many dried flower producers also use sustainable harvesting methods, often utilising flowers that might otherwise go to waste. By choosing dried flowers, I feel I’m supporting more sustainable practices in the floral industry. It’s a small but meaningful way to align my love for flowers with my desire to make more environmentally conscious choices.

Allergy-Friendly

For those who suffer from allergies, fresh flowers can sometimes be more of a burden than a joy. Dried flowers offer a wonderful alternative that allows everyone to enjoy floral beauty without the sneezes and sniffles.

You see, most dried flowers are pollen-free, making them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. I’ve found that I can now have beautiful floral arrangements in every room of the house without worrying about triggering allergic reactions in my guests.

With dried flowers, there’s no need to avoid certain blooms during high pollen seasons. I can enjoy my favourite flowers all year round, regardless of their natural blooming periods or the current pollen count outside.

Perfect for Special Occasions

One aspect of dried flowers that I’ve especially come to appreciate most is how useful they are on special occasions. Dried blooms are a better gift as they serve as lasting mementos. They feel more substantial as a gift because you know they last longer than a week or so.

For brides looking to preserve their wedding bouquets, for example, dried flowers offer a beautiful solution. I’ve seen stunning examples of preserved bridal bouquets that maintain their beauty for years, serving as tangible reminders of that special day.

Equally, dried flowers are also perfect for creating commemorative arrangements to mark significant life events. Whether it’s the birth of a child, a milestone anniversary, or in memory of a loved one, a carefully crafted dried flower arrangement can serve as a lasting tribute.

Caring for Dried Flowers: Tips and Tricks

While dried flowers are undoubtedly low-maintenance, a little care goes a long way in preserving their beauty for as long as possible. Here are some tips I’ve learned to keep my dried arrangements looking their best:

Gentle Handling

Dried flowers are more delicate than they appear, so it’s important to handle them gently. When dusting or rearranging, I use a soft brush or hairdryer on the coolest setting to remove any accumulated dust.

Avoiding Moisture and Direct Sunlight

To prevent fading and maintain the integrity of the flowers, I keep my arrangements away from direct sunlight and humid areas. A cool, dry spot is ideal for preserving their colour and shape.

Refreshing Your Arrangement

If your dried flowers start to look a bit tired, you can give them a new lease on life by adding a few fresh dried stems or rearranging the existing ones. This simple refresh can make your arrangement feel brand new again.

Give Them a Try

From their long-lasting nature and low maintenance requirements to their versatility and unique aesthetic appeal, dried flowers have proven to be a wonderful addition to our home. They’ve not only changed the way I think about floral decor but have also opened up new avenues for creativity and self-expression.

As a busy mum who loves to have a beautiful, welcoming home, I’ve found dried flowers to be the perfect solution. They offer all the joy and beauty of fresh flowers without the associated hassle and expense.

Whether you’re looking to add a touch of timeless elegance to your decor, create lasting memories, or simply enjoy the beauty of flowers without the upkeep, I wholeheartedly recommend giving dried flowers a try. You might just find, as I did, that they deserve a special place in your home.

The post Why Dried Flowers Deserve a Spot in Your Home first appeared on Mum Stuff.

The Ultimate Guide to Banishing Stains from

Life is messy, especially with kids in the house, and our carpets and sofas often bear the brunt of it.

From that morning cuppa gone awry to muddy paw prints trailing across the living room, stains are an inevitable part of home life. But with a bit of know-how and some elbow grease, you can tackle even the most stubborn marks and keep your soft furnishings looking spick and span.

I’m going to share with you the best ways to remove these stains from carpets and sofas, covering everything from everyday spills to those pesky set-in blemishes. I’ll go into effective cleaning techniques, homemade solutions, and tips for maintaining your furnishings in tip-top condition.

All the tips the professionals know and use to get the very best results.

Understanding Your Fabric

Before you start wielding cleaning products willy-nilly, it’s crucial to understand what you’re dealing with. Different materials require different approaches, and using the wrong method could lead to disaster.

Honestly, you can make it ten times worse, so don’t skip this bit.

Carpet Types

Carpets come in a variety of fibres, each with its own quirks:

Wool: Natural and durable, but prone to shrinking if exposed to heat or excessive moisture.

Nylon: Tough and stain-resistant, but can be sensitive to certain chemicals.

Polyester: Resistant to water-based stains but struggles with oil-based marks.

Olefin: Highly resistant to stains and moisture, but can be damaged by oil.

Sofa Fabrics

Sofas present their own unique challenges:

Leather: Luxurious but requires special care to prevent drying and cracking.

Microfibre: Durable and easy to clean, but can show water marks if not treated properly.

Cotton: Comfortable but prone to staining and shrinkage.

Velvet: Elegant but notoriously tricky to clean without damaging the pile.

Decoding Care Labels

Always check the care label before attempting any cleaning. You’ll often find these codes:

W: Water-based cleaning solutions are safe to use.

S: Only solvent-based cleaners should be used.

WS: Both water-based and solvent-based cleaners are suitable.

X: Vacuum only; professional cleaning required for stains.

Stick to the instructions!

Essential Cleaning Supplies

Having the right tools at your disposal can make all the difference when tackling stains. Here’s a list of must-have items for your cleaning arsenal:

White microfibre cloths

Soft-bristled brush

Spray bottles

Vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachment

Baking soda

White vinegar

Mild dish soap

Hydrogen peroxide

Rubbing alcohol

Enzyme-based cleaner for pet stains

Keep these supplies handy, and you’ll be ready to spring into action at the first sign of a spill.

General Stain Removal Techniques

When it comes to stain removal, speed is of the essence. The quicker you act, the better your chances of complete removal. Here’s a step-by-step guide for tackling most stains:

Blot, don’t rub: Use a clean, white cloth to blot up as much of the spill as possible. Rubbing can spread the stain and damage fibres.

Create a cleaning solution: Mix a teaspoon of mild dish soap with a cup of lukewarm water.

Test in an inconspicuous area: Always test your cleaning solution on a hidden spot to ensure it won’t damage or discolour the fabric.

Apply the solution: Using a clean cloth, gently dab the stain with the cleaning solution, working from the outside towards the centre.

Rinse: Use a separate cloth dampened with clean water to remove any soap residue.

Dry: Blot the area with a dry cloth or paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Repeat if necessary: For stubborn stains, you may need to repeat the process several times.

Remember, patience is key. Rushing the process or using harsh chemicals can do more harm than good.

Tackling Common Carpet Stains

Now, let’s dive into some specific strategies for those pesky stains that seem to crop up most often on our carpets.

Red Wine Woes

That glass of Merlot may be lovely with dinner, but it’s a nightmare on carpet. Here’s how to tackle it:

Blot up as much as possible with a clean, dry cloth.

Sprinkle salt over the stain to absorb moisture.

Mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water.

Apply the solution to the stain, blotting gently.

Rinse with clean water and blot dry.

Coffee Calamities

Morning brew gone awry? Don’t panic:

Blot up excess coffee with a clean cloth.

Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water.

Apply the solution to the stain, working from the outside in.

Rinse with clean water and blot dry.

If the stain persists, try a mixture of baking soda and water to form a paste. Apply, let dry, then vacuum.

Muddy Messes

Muddy footprints are a common sight, especially after a very British downpour. Here’s how to deal with them:

Allow the mud to dry completely.

Vacuum up as much dried mud as possible.

Mix one teaspoon of liquid dish soap with a cup of lukewarm water.

Dab the solution onto the stain with a clean cloth.

Rinse with clean water and blot dry.

Pet Accidents

Our furry friends can sometimes leave unwelcome surprises. Here’s how to clean and deodorise:

Blot up as much of the mess as possible.

Apply an enzyme-based pet stain remover according to package instructions.

For odours, sprinkle baking soda over the area, let sit overnight, then vacuum.

Sofa Stain Solutions

Sofas don’t typically get the same abuse as carpets, but they don’t escape unscathed either. Let’s look at some effective methods for different types of sofa fabrics.

Leather

Leather sofas are stylish but require special care:

Wipe up spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth.

For stubborn stains, mix equal parts water and white vinegar.

Dab the solution gently onto the stain with a soft cloth.

Wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Apply a leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.

Microfibre

Microfibre sofas are popular for their durability, but they can be tricky to clean:

Check the care label – if it’s marked ‘S’, use rubbing alcohol.

Apply the alcohol with a clean, white cloth, working in circular motions.

Allow to air dry, then brush with a soft-bristled brush to restore texture.

Cotton

Cotton sofas are comfortable but prone to staining:

Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with two cups of cool water.

Using a clean, white cloth, dab the solution onto the stain.

Rinse with a cloth dampened with clean water.

Blot dry with a towel.

DIY Cleaning Solutions

Sometimes, the best cleaning solutions are the ones you can whip up in your own kitchen. Here are some effective homemade remedies:

All-Purpose Cleaner

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. This solution is great for general cleaning and light stains.

Grease-Busting Paste

Make a paste with baking soda and water. This is excellent for oil-based stains on carpets and upholstery.

Odour Eliminator

Sprinkle baking soda liberally over carpets or sofas, let sit overnight, then vacuum. This will absorb odours and freshen fabrics.

Deep-Cleaning Solution

Mix 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 tablespoon dish soap, and warm water in a spray bottle. This is great for deeper cleaning of both carpets and upholstery.

Conclusion

In actuality, there are only a handful of methods you need to learn and a small number of cleaning products to stock up on before you can tackle almost any stain with ease.
