A Breastfeeding Story - Boobie-Buddies

Hi I'm Pip

Mum of two lovely boys aged 9 and a half yrs and 2 and a half yrs.

I had traumatic births with each son, the first a emergency c section under general anthsetic, after 3 days labour, and failed ventouse, and the second son a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarian) with forceps and 3rd degree tears, and internal problems . It was touch and go both times but thankfully the outcome was a fantastic one eventually!

Luckily breastfeeding proved no problem, although the hospital staff were great the breastfeeeding support was nil.. As we have allergies and asthma on both sides of the family, and after research we decided it made perfect sense .letting the boys take the nursing lead each time and stop when they were ready, this had undoubtedly helped their immune systems . I wanted to help them any way I could, and give them the best start in life, both emotionally and physically and mentally., breastfeeding provides all that and more! Both nursed until they were around 27 months of age. When I started out on my breastfeeding journey I never thought they would nurse for that length of time, but you evolve along with your children, and if you can
just have the confidence to allow things to run its natural course, better for all, don't battle against your Mummy instincts, go with the flow as they say!

I joined La Leche League who provided a fantastic support network via monthly meetings and it emotionally helped me through some tough times when My Mum died suddenly when Our youngest was 4 weeks old., whilst I was caring for My Dad who had recently had two strokes , so its all been a very difficult time but I have made some fantastic close friendships along the
way with other like minded Mums , although our youngest son stopped nursing in Feb 2008, I want to carry on helping other new Mums where I can, by being a member still, its so crucial early on to get the support you need with positioning, and mother to mother support.

Sadly there are so many pre conceived ideas about breastfeeding in general, its sometimes mis imformation, and ignorance, not being aware of choice, or having the support you need . I do appreciate some formula fed babies are not fed like this through choice, as complications or medical reasons arise. And I sympathize with those mums, but if you can give it your best
shot, it is SO worth it in the long run. It's such a beautiful thing to achieve with your baby or toddler. Their confidence and security grows,
knowing their emotional and physical needs are being met, and a boost for
yourself knowing they are "all home grown!"

Continuing the theme, over the past year I have been drawing up and registering my idea and design with the UK patent office, for My Educational Magnetic Breastfeeding Dolls which I made a few proto types to see how My sons liked them, which proved a real hit so I have taken my project one step further and am now getting a Long standing toy manufacturer to make up my design ..I have a website, if you would like to read more details which is
www.boobiebuddiesbfdolls.co.uk this is a working site in progress as its early days, photos and production stock due soon . email me any queries, and I will try to help, details on my site which is updated frequently by my eldest brother who designed the site up for me.for which I am so grateful. .

I have had two articles published in LLLGB news magazine, and i have had so much interest for my products via websites & educational sectors its all a question of "watch this space" But am very proud of my idea and how its gone from a thought, to a sketch, to a working proto type to a Plush Toy! There are far too many dolls on the market with bottles, I wanted to alter the balance and give Our children the chance to have a Breastfeeding doll to role play with giving out that all important message to parents and children alike that they have a choice of how our babies are fed, and who knows they may go on to breastfeed the next generation ! and help breastfeeding be seen as the normal, not the exception as it sadly is seen as in some cases.

Finally My Thanks goes out to my Husband without whom my project would not have got this far. x He has been my back bone, financially and emotionally in allowing me the chance to stay at home with Our boys while chasing my dream. !

Happy Nursing Everyone ! Kindest Regards x
